I'm doing a school project.. we have to build a model of the castle and label ten parts.. one of the ten parts wat the postern gate... we looked on a bunch of pictures and couldn't find it! Please... can you send me a picture of a castle with the postern gate labeled! Thanks a whole bunch! V
Gordon The postern was basically the back door, and was away from the main door at some point on the curtain wall. The exact location varied from castle to castle, so if you are drawing a castle you can put it on any other wall except that which has the main gateway. It is usually a small entrance, certainly smaller than the main gateway. If you go to my site linked below, and follw the links to find plans of Bothwell, you will find the postern in the south wall. Look at the ground plan, and elevation from the south, it is beside the small round tower to the left. www.gordons-castles.co.uk
